http://www.sfchronicle.com/science/article/State-bills-seek-to-cut-children-s-exposure-to-11948286.php It all started when a therapy dog from San Diego refused to drink water at an elementary school. Which was a clue that something wasn't right with the water causing many to question what's the problem here? After, testing what was wrong they were able to analyze the situation and what they conclude was that over time the pipes began to degrade.By the pipes degrading they began to build-up polyvinyl chloride, the polymer in PVC, but that wasn't all they have found.Testing done by the San Diego Cooperative Charter School and district they also, found elevated levels of lead within the water. With these elevated levels of lead that are very harmful in which they are mostly found in water fountains and taps in schools that are in San Diego and Los Angeles. However, before this outbreak the district decided to fix or seal hundreds of contaminated fountains a decade ago. Now since this has became a serious matter many children have been tested and many doctors are finding elevated levels of lead among the children. In which is not a good sign due to the neurotoxins that cause brain damage as well as developmental disorders. As. of now the California Water Board Program is currently under no legal requirements to have schools test their water for free ,but how many are actually testing their water to insure the children aren't drinking lead. Within a month the legislature will decide upon if doctors should ask more questions about living conditions that might be exposing the child to high levels of lead. Also, to have all school districts test their water and if found they will need to be fixed or cap any source of it. In California the State Health Department has found that two percent of children have elevated levels of lead. There isn't much that can be done really, but to have children be tested and doctors take more consideration in asking families more about living conditions and informing more about the risks. “The problem we have right now is we don’t know all the different sources of lead in the environment,” said Quirk, chair of the Assembly Committee on Environmental Safety and Toxic Materials.
